Written By David Mytton / Matt Simpson

Once you have completed the purchase of your ListMessenger Pro License from the online store, you need to download and install the application. This guide will take you through the steps required to install it onto your own website.

Minimum Requirements
In order to use ListMessenger Pro, you need the following available on your web server:
  • PHP 4.1.2+ (PHP 4.3.0+ or PHP 5+ recommended)
  • MySQL 3.23+
  • Firefox 1.0+, NS 7.0+, Safari 1+, IE 5.5+
  • pSpell with PHP (for spell checking only)
If you are unsure as to whether you have these available, please contact your web hosting provider for assistance.

1.0 Downloading, Extracting, Editing and Uploading
1.1 Select the "My Orders" link from the right menu in the Members Area from the ListMessenger website. This will display a tabled list of all your purchases. Click on "View" next to your order and you will be taken to the details page for your order.
1.1

1.2 At the bottom of the page is a "Software" section. Underneath is the list of software in your order. To start the download, simply click the name of the application to begin the download. The application will be downloaded as a .zip format.
1.2

1.3 Once the download is completed, you need to extract the files to a directory to allow you to edit them. This can be achieved by using a tool such as WinZip which is freely available for download at winzip.com. You must retain the full directory structure.

1.4 You now need to download your license key to allow you to install ListMessenger. From the Members Area of the ListMessenger website, select the "My Keys" link from the right menu and you will be presented with a list of your available keys.
1.4.1

Click on the "Available Key" link and you will be taken to the screen shown below:
1.4.2

Read the points outlined regarding key usage and then enter your domain name in the "Installation Domain Name" field in the form on yourdomain.com without the http://www. If you are using a subdomain for your installation, you should enter this into the field as subdomain.yourdomain.com.

Once your have assigned the key, it will be e-mailed to you (in .zip format) along with an authentication code. Keep this e-mail safe as you will need it for any future installations.

You can review existing key details and resend the key and activation code by clicking on the "Assigned Key" link from the "My Keys" section of the Members Area of the ListMessenger Website.

1.5 Once you have received your license key, you need to place it in your ListMessenger directory and it will be ready for use when it comes to the installation.

Do not modify the key.php file in any way, shape or form or ListMessenger will not function, although you can certainly open the file to see what is inside!
1.5

1.6 Before uploading and proceeding with the automated installation, you need to enter your database details into the config.inc.php file, which is located in the "includes" directory of the ListMessenger installation. You can edit the file using any editor such as Notepad, Vi or Dreamweaver. There are 4 fields that must be edited to match your own configuration - database_host, database_name, database_user, database_pass. If you are unsure as to what to enter here, contact your web hosting company for assistance. You can also fill in the tables_prefix field if you wish to customise the database structure, or you can leave this blank. Once you have finished, save the file.
1.6

1.7 You are now ready to upload to your webspace. This can be done using your favourite FTP client. Upload all the files and directories to your site. You must retain the full directory structure.

2.0 Installing ListMessenger
ListMessenger includes an automated installation system that will guide you through the setup process step by step. This section of the guide will explain each stage of the installation.

2.1 Browse to the directory you installed ListMessenger into on your web server using your favourite browser. If everything above was done correctly, you should see the welcome screen and license. If there is an error, simply follow the instructions provided to resolve it. You need to read through the license and then click "I Agree" to continue.

2.2 Enter your key information which must be exactly the same information you entered when purchasing your licence key.

You are also required to enter an authentication code which appears in the e-mail which was sent to you that contained the key.zip file. If you have lost this e-mail, you can have it sent to you again from the Member area of the ListMessenger website.
2.2

2.3 Once you click Continue, the database tables will be created into the database you specified in step 1.6. You can see which tables have been added from the output. Click on "Continue" to proceed to the next step.
2.3

2.4 You can now register your copy of ListMessenger entering details into our Registrations Database.

This information will never be sold, rented or ever given to anyone besides ourselves. This data is collected for informational and research purposes only and complies fully with the Licence Agreement / Privacy Policy you initially agreed to.

You can also tick the "Send Usage Information" box. If you do, you will send us the following system information: PHP Version, PHP Safe_Mode Status, PHP Registered Globals Status, Max Execution Time, Web Server Type and what browser you use. This is just so we can tell what our software is being installed on. This information also is stated in our privacy policy.

We would appreciate it if you could submit this information as it helps us develop our software, but it is not required.

Once you have finished, click on "Update" to continue. The information will be submitted and then the "Continue" button will appear. Clicking this will take you to the Program Preferences Update page.

2.5 Please take a moment to update the ListMessenger preferences. You can modify these settings later by clicking Control Panel > Preferences from within ListMessenger. The default username and password to log into ListMessenger are the database username and password you"ve set in the config.inc.php file in step 1.6. You can easily change this later by logging into ListMessenger and changing them in Control Panel > Preferences or change it on this pages.

If you are unsure as to what a specific configuration option is, hover your mouse over the small Question Mark and an explanation will be displayed. When you are finished, click update and then "Continue".

2.6 The final step is to make a number of directories writable by PHP. This will allow certain features to work correctly as well as allow you to send messages properly.
2.6.1

In order to make these directories writable, you need to use the chmod command (Unix/Linux only). You should then set the chmod value to either 766 or 777 by using either the command through SSH, via your FTP client or via another method. If you are unsure as to how to do this, you should contact your web hosting company for assistance. Windows users should not need to do this as these advanced permissions do not usually exist on Windows based servers. When you have done this, refresh to the page to double check the files are writable and then click "Finish".
2.6.2

2.7 After clicking "Finish", you will be taken to the ListMessenger login page where you can login to the system using the username and password you set in step 2.5.
